To me “Hayrick,” by Arnold Blanch, represents emptiness and unfulfilled dreams. This artwork reminds me of the Jode family’s farm. It is a sad picture, a stark contrast with Maya Angelou’s mountains of freedom. Blanch’s picture symbolizes the land’s lack of opportunity. “Hayrick,” like the Jodes’ life on their farm, offers no promise of a better future. The picture is dark, cloudy, and sad looking. The only chance for an improved life seems to be the road that leads away from the farm and toward the lighter sky in the distance. The emptiness in the painting might lead the its viewer to believe that the farm’s owners have, indeed, chosen to travel down that road, in search of something better.
